Act I - Jacob’s Inn - Bethlehem.
(Sarah and Lydia are on one side of the stage looking for something while Adam is on the other with a rake or shovel.)
Sarah: It’s got to be here somewhere. (looking around)
Rebecca: Well I wish we would find it, I’ve got better things to do.
Adam: There you are! I don’t appreciate you girls roaming all over Bethlehem
and leaving me to get stuck with all the work around here!
Lydia: What are you talking about?
Sarah: Yeah, we didn’t have any more work. We all did our chores this morning - even you.
Adam: Well, you know we don’t always go by the rules when the hotel
business in this city is booming.
Rebecca: Sheesh! You sound just like Father. Is that why you’re busy? Does it
have to do with all the people staying here in our inn?
Adam: Everyone is in Bethlehem because of the census. We are packed and now
Mother has come up with the crazy idea of using the barn.
Sarah: The barn? What is she going to use the barn for?
Adam: Well, I think she said you girls are going to have to stay there for the next few days. There is hay for you to eat, and to sleep on, and...
Sarah: That’s not funny, Adam! But I would rather stay in the barn than to have
to share a room with Lydia. She snores!
Lydia: Ha Ha! I may snore, but at least I can sleep without having to hold my
little blankey!
Adam: Speaking of the little baby’s blankey, I found it over by the well. (in a
teasing voice)I’m surprised the eight year old toddler wasn’t looking for
it.
Lydia: Where do you think we have been, brother without a brain? We’ve been searching for that useless piece of cloth - that blanket - for the past hour!
(Mother enters but no one notices her)
Adam: You’d better be careful how you talk about it. Sarah might cry - wah, wah,
wah!
Mother: That’s enough, Adam.
(Adam jumps as if surprised - He did not see Mother coming.)
Mother: Have you finished cleaning out the barn? You know I told that young
couple that they could stay there tonight.
Lydia: What couple, Mother?
Mother: There names are Mary and Joseph. I felt so sorry for them - especially that woman. I would hate to be in her condition in a strange
city, without family and no place to rest.
Sarah: You mean someone really is going to sleep in our barn? They can have our
room.
Mother: That is very kind of you, Sarah.
Sarah: Yes, We girls can sleep in Adam’s room and he can sleep out in the cold with the cows, the donkeys, the...

Production Notes
Synopsis:
This play is about a little girl named Sarah, the innkeeper’s daughter, who is very attached to her pink blanket that she has had since birth. She loves this blanket and carries it everywhere with her. The other children make fun of her because they feel she is too old to carry a security blanket. The location is in Bethlehem, during the time of the census. At the end of the play the other children give baby Jesus a gift or do something for them, but Sarah has nothing to give. Then she remembers that she does have something special - she gives him her blanket so he won’t be cold. She has truly given from her heart.
The play should take about 15-20 minutes including a verse or two of songs between the scenes. There are speaking parts for one older female teen or adult, 3 boys (7-12), 3 girls (7-12). It is possible to have an unlimited amount of children in this play as you can have as many angels and shepherds as you desire. This is good because you always have some children who want to dress up and be in the play, but are not able to attend practices. For these children, a part where they just have to stand around Baby Jesus at the manger is a great idea.
| Speaking Parts:
Adam - innkeeper’s son Lydia - innkeeper’s daughter Rebecca - innkeeper’s daughter, carries a blanket Sarah - innkeeper’s youngest child, Mother - innkeeper’s wife, children’s mother Thomas - shepherd boy Benjamin - shepherd boy Mary - mother of Jesus

Stage Setup
For Sarah’s Security, as with most Taylor Made Ministry plays, elaborate props are not necessary. Most scenes take place in front of the Inn. You may have a door, or carboard made to look like the entrance to a house, or porch. As long as the children dress in Biblical clothing, backgroud scenes are not really necessary. For the other scene in the pasture, there is no need for scenery unless you would want to have a tree, or part of a picket fense. You could dim the lights just a little as it is nearing sunset. For the manger scene, you could have a small manger to lay the baby in, or just a chair for Mary to sit in. You could have hay, additional stuffed animals, etc. - anything to make it look like a barn or stable.
Props:
Biblical Clothing - robes, head pieces(towel, etc.), sash, etc.
Angel costumes
Shepherd’s Staffs
Pink Material - a blanket may be OK, but you want something light-weight enough to fix as a head piece, and long enough to wrap around Sarah.
Rake or Shovel - for Adam to use in the first scene
Stuffed Lambs - one for each of the shepherds to bring to the manger
Manger
Hay for the stable
Chair for Mary
